Greenbelt, Maryland’s Utopia Film Festival 2013 is pleased to announce that Wheelchair Diaries: One Step Up is an official Utopia 2013 selection for the Oct. 18-20 festival.
Wheelchair Diaries: One Step Up is about Reid Davenport’s journey to investigate Europe's lack of accessibility after being discouraged from studying in Italy because he has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Along with his difficulties traveling throughout Europe, three Europeans with disabilities he meets share stories that put disability in a light rarely shone in the media.
“What makes this opportunity special is the fact that this is the first time Wheelchair Diaries will be shown within the Beltway area, where the idea for the documentary was born,” said filmmaker Davenport.
Davenport made the film as an undergraduate at the George Washington University. “I’m excited to see the reaction from the local audience and filmmakers.”
The film has recently fostered an increased level of media attention with a feature article about Davenport’s excursion in the Washington Post, a story that made its way onto NPR and the Best Short Documentary Award from the Awareness Film Festival.
Wheelchair Diaries will screen on Saturday Oct. 19 at 4:00 pm at the Greenbelt Community Center, 15 Crescent Rd., Greenbelt, Maryland. Reid Davenport will be available for questions and answers after the film. For more information about Utopia Film Festival 2013, see utopiafilmfestival.org
