CRPD Education and Outreach Going Strong
June 22, 2011
USICD's education campaign supporting the Convention on the Rights for Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) continues to reach new audiences and spread awareness of the treaty. Last month, Executive Director David Morrissey travelled out to Kansas University where he presented two CRPD workshops, one to general faculty and students and the other to a research group at the Research and Training Center on Independent Living (RTCIL) led by Director and USICD board member Glen White. Continuing his dialogue with America's heartland on the CRPD, David also presented at the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) annual conference in St. Paul. In this half-day session, David was joined by Steve Eidelman, Professor of Human Services Policy and Leadership at the University of Delaware, and three self-advocates from Minnesota's ACT Network: Kelly Lee, Carrie Varner, and Peggy Mehan. Of the event, Varner said: "It's one thing to know your rights but it's another thing to know you deserve the rights and know how to advocate for them."
This month, USICD's Esmé Grant and Suzanne Richard offered a CRPD Treaty 101 workshop for the 28 American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) summer interns and other interns placed on Capitol Hill. This training included an international panel representing experiences from Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. Next week Esmé will be back at it, presenting a CRPD workshop to the Human Rights on the Hill conference, joined by USICD's international fellow Sherzodbek Sharipov and our AAPD intern Jean de Dieu Mukunzi to offer insight from their international disability rights work and personal experiences. Also next week, board member Ann Cody will be on a panel addressing the CRPD, sports and inclusive development at UN Headquarters in New York.
Next month, Esmé & Suzanne will be staffing a new poster display with educational materials on the CRPD at the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) annual conference in DC and USICD board member David Hutt will be presenting on the CRPD with U.S. Special Advisor for International Disability Rights Judy Heumann at the Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) conference in Seattle. USICD is always looking for more opportunities to present on the CRPD and international disability rights. Please feel free to contact Outreach Coordinator Suzanne Richard for more information or suggestions for future CRPD presentations.
